Review of Ju Dou (1990) by Tom C — 10 Mar 2007
Although perceived as a powerful critique of China's aging Politburo during the time of the post-Tiananmen Square crackdown, this film's theme is equally powerful today. Whether it be the preachers from America's Christian right, or the Arab world's conservative Muslim clerics, this movie depicts how an overly strict conservative oligarchy can weild its power to the determent and destruction of its subjects.
Gong Li's performance is as powerful in its understated reserve as the fabrics are vibrant and bright at the textile dying factory she works in. A visual and cinematic delight.
