Review of Joy Division (2009) by Joe D — 24 May 2008
It's always a relief to see a Joy Division doc that doesn't mythologise Ian Curtis. Plus, it acknowledged the input of the visionary producer Martin Hannet.
But, the film makes odd links between the music and a modern, renovated Manchester, and it doesn't focus enough on the musical legacy of the band, whose influence has stretched far and wide. I also would have liked to have seen Curtis's wife and daughter in it, but they obviously declined.
