Review of Joy (2015) by Samy A — 03 Jan 2016
It is easy to see why this film left some cold in spite of its great acting and sure handed direction. One of our myths is rags to riches. This film explodes the myth. Every time we think Joy has won a newer and greater obstacle approaches, like tougher bosses in a beat 'em up video game.
As such we never get very long to simply enjoy her success; there is no triumphal Rocky montage in this one. Even in victory, there is a sense of lost, in keeping with Russell's essential cinematic inspiration: 1970s dramatic film.
Would give it a 9 but the ending was a tad weak.
