Review of Joy (2015) by Tim B — 02 Mar 2016
Joy features the trademark David O. Russell messy storytelling that was featured in Silver Lings Playbook and American Hustle. Joy is a bit too slight and doesn't delve nearly enough into this woman's life.
We get some great acting scenes with Lawrence but the structure and the last twenty minutes is a mess of plot that never coheres and feels rushed. Lawrence, however, saves the film from becoming a trifle with her requisite emotion and maturity behind the camera.
Rating: 56.
