Review of Joy (2015) by Constantine M — 08 Jan 2016
So this is my first official movie of 2016, let's get started:
It's not David O. Russell's best work but really his most ambitious.
Once again he collaborates with Jennifer Lawrence as Joy, one of the most daring female inventors in U.S. history.
A single-mother desires to get her life together by making an invention that she hopes will catch on and sell to millions.
It's a huge struggle for her since her dad is overly-critical, both her parents are divorced and cant stand one another, her sister seems to be more successful, her ex-husband doesn't see her as much, and she has to make the money on her own to sell the product in order to support herself and her daughter.
Joy's challenges are like that of a sicadia, an insect that burrows itself underground for 17 years and comes back out; she has dreams that if she keeps to herself for so long she'll have so many regrets that her family will keep reminding her.
Keep in mind this movie is very devoted to business-talk, investments, embezzlement, fraud, debt, quality value service, and so forth.
Still the film relies on Lawrence's undying passion to get her invention off the ground showing a degree of independence as well as womanhood.
A really big and amazing cast help shape Joy into the person she was always meant to be.
This is a woman who wanted to do something on her own and fought hard against the oppressive limitations and male superiority.
The world of business is the way it is; you'll always have enemies to overcome as well as convincing the public of an item that wants them to make the purchase.
