Review of Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) by Seth S — 14 Jul 2012
The movie benefits greatly from exceptional special effects, fun action scenes, and likable characters. It seemed that after every action scene, the characters fall from a very high place, a fall that should kill them, but they bound right back up every time.
The story revolves around the center of the Earth. Professor Trevor Anderson and his nephew Sean go on a journey to find the center of the Earth. They are helped along the way by a mountain guide named Hannah. They find the center of the Earth, but now must get back out.
What does boost the film are some very fun performances by Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, and Anita Briem. Fraser's plays a fun character. Hutcherson was still developing as an actor, but he is very talented.
Also, the action scenes are almost...retro. There is a Jurassic Park style dinosaur chase, and a Temple of Doom-like mine car chase. I couldn't help but grin during these scenes. Drawing from Spielberg for your action scenes is not a bad idea.
Overall, this is nothing special. It is fun and light, and no serious point is made. Turn your brain off before watching and enjoy it.
"Haven't you ever seen a dinosaur before?...Not with skin on it!" 6/10.
