Review of Joshua (2007) by Emil S — 31 Dec 2007
Chilling portrait of a child sociopath, free of the histrionics usually associated with the 'evil child' genre. Great performances but ultimately let down by a maddeningly contrived script laced with plot-holes and illogical scenes.
***SPOILERS AHEAD!*** For example: Why would the Cairns keep the video of the depressed wife? Why would Joshua film himself pestering the baby? Brad just happens to choose the tape that contains Joshua's filming?! This in turn leads him to go to the art gallery, where he arrives at the exact moment his mother dies.
Way too convenient! Also - why didn't Brad show anyone Joshu's video? These will make sense in the context of the film. It's still worth watching despite the plot deficiencies, mainly for the effective atmosphere of low-key dread and suspense.
