Review of Jonah Hex (2010) by Jason L — 09 Dec 2012
I have never read the comic book series this is based on, so I approached it strictly as a moviegoer.
The movie's biggest flaw is that it feels like a sequel, rather than an introduction. The opening montage introducing the characters and story background is weak. Yeah, it was informative and brought you up to speed, but it didn't cause any emotional attachment to any of the characters. The movie would have been much better had it picked up the storyline earlier and allowed the killing of Jonah's family and branding of his face to become the early stage of the rising action. It could have more readily built from that point and finished strong. As it is, it kinda sucks. It drags on showing all these variations of a tormented soul without really having any point to anything. It's like, "Hey, let's throw this in so everyone remembers that 15 minutes ago we showed Johan Hex's internal struggle, cause they may have forgotten or something.".
Next time, making it smarter and shy away from dumbing it down so freaking much and you MIGHT have a movie worth seeing.
