Review of Jonah Hex (2010) by Kimberly C — 15 Mar 2013
After hearing multiple bad reviews of this film, I decided to skip Jonah Hex both as a theatrical and DVD release. It wasn't until recently that I finally got to watch it and I was pleasantly surprised to find a film that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Granted this film could've been a lot better, but it could have been much worse. After being forced to witness the burning of his family and being left for dead after his face has been branded, ex-Confederate soldier Jonah Hex is revived by an Indian tribe who teach him how to communicate with the dead.
Angry about what happened to his family, Jonah has vowed revenge against Quentin Turnbull, the man who killed his family. When he learns that Turnbull has a weapon of mass destruction armed and aimed at Washington D.
C., it's up to him to put a stop to the diabolical madman. Jonah Hex is nowhere near being the perfect superhero movie. However, there have been far worse superhero films out there (i.e. Ghost Rider).
Josh Brolin does a pretty good job playing the western hero, creating a feeling of grittiness throughout the film. The action used in the film is also pretty exciting. It's nothing too special, but kept a grin on my face during every explosion.
Some of the problems of the film include the script. There are points of the film where I was confused who Hex was talking to, what was going on on-screen, among other plot holes. The absolute worst bit of the film was Megan Fox.
After seeing her in films like Transformers 1&2 and Jennifer's Body, it's clear that she's not the best actress in Hollywood. I don't even think that she should've been used in the film because of the way the script was written.
The character was barely in the film until the last 10 minutes of the film for a few moments of action redemption, so I didn't really care about her in the end. All in all, Jonah Hex isn't too bad a film but you can certainly do better for a superhero film.
Fortunately, there are much worse films out there than this, making it a bit enjoyable for a movie night with friends.
