Review of Johnny Suede (1991) by Leah Y — 01 Feb 2008
In some ways, one of the more thought-provoking films I've seen in a while. A bizarre little film--I love it. Nick Cave as Freak Storm. Fantastic. Tom DiCillo sets up such an odd story with such odd characters--could Johnny Suede be one of the more profound philosophical statements in independent film in the 90's? Maybe. Could it be a weird piece of relative fluff? Maybe. For now, I err on the side of the former. Some TERRIFIC dialogue.
"Is that a hair dryer?".
"Yes... but it's broken.".
"Oh.".
Catherine Keener may play it a little too staight, but ultimately I think even that worked well. Yeah. Nothing but love for Johnny Suede.
