Review of Johnny Suede (1991) by Edward C — 10 Mar 2011
JOHNNY SUEDE opens with the titular character finding a lovely pair of shoes after they've been tossed out a window. He puts them on, they fit, and a facade starts to build. There is an old expression that "the clothes make the man," which is true in the eyes of others, but shoes inform how we perceive ourselves.
The shoes we wear often inform the way we behave and present ourselves physically. Johnny Suede's shoes make him think he's too cool for school, and a broken heart causes him to approach love from a cool distance he is incapable of pulling off.
Brad Pitt is fantastic in the lead role, and he puts on a facade as big as his pompadour in this film, only to have his poseur exterior slowly crumble, something he has a tough time dealing with. Tom DiCillo's debut was met with with a cool reception, and I'm not sure why, but at least it helped highlight Pitt's abilities as a leading man.
