I know a lot of people love this film but I just can't get my head around it. I understand the flipping of sexual codes and that all well and good but the film has such a problem with tone, I just can't get over it.
It's part comedy, part serious drama, all wrapped in a nice little anti-McCarthy package. It's not bad and it's definitely important for the western genre, I just can't bring myself to actually like it.
Maybe it's Mercedes McCambridge's ridiculous histrionics...
