Review of Johnny Guitar (1954) by Chris L — 05 Dec 2009
This vaguely ambiguous and strangely contradictory western that doesn't feel like a typical western is probably one of the most remarkable films by Nicholas Ray (of "Rebel Without a Cause" fame).
It actually was a favorite of Truffaut and Godard and other New Wave filmmakers and it is not hard to see why. In a way, it was a response to the McCarthy era witch hunt that occurred in the States. Scorsese was also impressed by its distinct look and feel.
The amazing thing is the film still feels very modern, unlike many other films of the 50's - it can be applied to many of today's social and political issues.
