Review of John Wick (2014) by Danny R — 03 Oct 2015
A stylish taut knockout action thriller with a first-rate Keanu Reeves who is in fine form here and delivers a superbly game performance as John Wick, a mysterious former professional assassin who retired after his beloved wife passed away from an illness.
A low-life punk and his crew steals Wick's prize '69 Mustang muscle car and kill his beloved little dog Daisy, along some other stupid acts that they will pay dearly for when Wick goes after them.
One of the punks is Iosef, well-played by Alfie Allen, who is the vicious son of a ruthless Russian mob boss named Viggo, nicely played by Michael Nyqvist. Well all hell is about to break loose when John Wick declares total war on the New York Russian mob.
Astute direction by David Leitch & Chad Staheiski, with gorgeous cinematography by Jonathan Sela, and strong supporting performances by Willem Dafoe, Dean Winters, Adrianne Palicki, Ian McShane and John Luguizamo.
The brilliant ultra-violent shootouts and fight action sequences are absolutely jaw-dropping. This is the coolest action thriller of the year by far, and a welcome back to form for Reeves, who is a total badass here.
A must-see for anyone who is a action film lover. Highly Recommended.
