Review of John Q (2002) by Daniel K — 11 Apr 2009
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the script. It seems highly derivative and predictable throughout. It essentially has nothing new to say. I suppose it would work if Cassavetes and team were able to invest the story with more emotion.
The film falters on all the high notes instead of excelling. Washington and company give acceptable performances, but none are powerful enough to raise the film above its mediocrity. Duvall is pretty disappointing actually.
I suspect this is the kind of picture that plays best the first viewing and then experiences a steep decline in entertainment quality. I'd rather see a more nuanced political examination of the issue of health care.
This picture is anything but nuanced and anything but realistic for the most part. It's as if everyone was just going through the motions here.
