"Bubba Ho-tep" director knows how to use a tight budget to realize a truly weird premise. It may not always seem to congeal together but there's enough inventiveness and bizarre concepts/creatures to keep interest.
My answer to the riddle at the beginning: trick question. It was a gun what done him in.
