Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Charles B — 28 Feb 2013
The structure is a little unstuck-in-time, due to the crazy story of an otherworld invasion it is trying to tell, but this works to the films advantage, despite leaving the plot a little incomprehensible at times.
A zany blend of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Naked Lunch, Constantine and Buckaroo Banzai. The deliberate off-beat nature of the film, including gore, monsters, non-sequitor moments and drugged-out internal dialog leave a movie that is rather disjointed but still pretty fun.
While this is a good example of the genre, few who lack interest in campy movies like Big Trouble in Little China are going to find much of worth in this self-indulgent movie, but those that like this sort of thing will be won over.
