Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Arlene M — 31 Jul 2013
John Dies at the End is not for the skeptic-a point that the film makes directly at several points, though haters will still complain about the lack of linear plot and the title of the film (apparently with no sense of irony).
First scene opens with a zombie version of the Theseus' Ship paradox, which got my attention immediately (and you really do have to pay attention). The wild scramble of the film, its jolting and hilarious dialogue paired seamlessly with amazing visuals, is unparalleled in this dimension.
Definitely one of those films you want to watch again for full effect. It does what it does with great subtlety and dexterity, while making the viewer feel like she is on a magic roller coaster. Superb acting from Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Paul Giamatti, and Clancy Brown.
David Wong, Don Coscarelli, thanks for getting your message across to the Arnie Blondestones of the world. The soy sauce chooses you!
