Surprisingly better than I anticipated.
While watching I made a few comparisons to Flash Gordon, although not quite as camp or cheesy, but it turns out this is based on a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan.
I don't think the trailers for this movie did it justice, nor did the poor reviews, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected it to be.
The ending seems to set it up for a sequel, whether that happens or not is a different matter.
