Review of Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (2007) by Liz W — 12 Apr 2008
Awesome documentary about one of the only true artists of our time. loved how it focused on the man and the music, and didn't follow the traditional rock-doc formula of focusing on the trashy gossip/substance abuse/egomania, instead showing a man's true love and passion for music and forging relationships with people around music and social consciousness.
highlights include the reunion of joe and mick to support local firefighters and the opening scene of joe singing white riot in the recording studio sans backup. loved how they pay homage to joe's love of campfires by sitting around one reminiscing and playing music together.
interviews with bono and johnny depp were a little grating, but thankfully, they only play a small part in building a picture of the man and the impact his music had on young and old... I want to see it again!
