The story in Joe Kidd is surprisingly broad because it doesn't succumb to any predictable patterns (well, not much) and keeps you guessing. Clint Eastwood's stellar performance is just as astounding as nearly any one of his other westerns and his character just as perplexing, and it's worth a watch for those reasons.
Other than that, Joe Kidd is a more than decent entry into the classic Western genre.
