Review of Joe (2014) by David G — 30 May 2015
Nicolas Cage, where have you been? Now this is what Nicolas Cage should be doing. Joe almost feels personal, and it is certainly Cage's best performance in at least ten years. Joe follows a boy as he takes a job to support his mom and sister, and he befriends his employer in the process.
This is basically a story of redemption, for both characters, but this is definitely Cage's film. Maybe this is because he hasn't delivered anything good in a while, but he gives a hell of a performance.
That being said, Tye Sheridan is great, and his character is just as complex as Cage's. The film moves nicely, except for some parts concerning the father and son quarrels. These parts tend to drag on a little long, but they do come to a nice conclusion.
Overall, this is another step in the right direction for Cage, and hopefully he can keep up this level of work.
