Review of Jodorowsky's Dune (2013) by Ken S — 27 Apr 2015
Great documentary about a film that never came to be. Alejandro Jodorowsky, best known for his abstract cult films "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain," attempted to create an ambitious, bold, and crazy adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune.
" Unfortunately, the film fell apart after an extensive pre-production when it failed to find proper funding in Hollywood. The documentary gives you a good taste of the kind of film it was going to be, and the kind of talent that was involved.
..and it also gives you a good sense of Jodorowsky's personality, which is charismatic yet a little unrealistic. I think his version sounds crazy, and more interesting than what Lynch eventually made.
I doubt Lynch ever had the passion for the project that Jodorowsky had. Film fans and sci-fi fans are sure to find some enjoyment in this documentary.
