Review of Jobs (2013) by Matthew C — 29 Nov 2013
More of an informative television movie than an inspiring biopic, this movie doesn't sugarcoat the fact that Steve Jobs came off as an ass sometimes, but it overdoes it so much that what we're left with is a very unlikeable protagonist.
It fails to show the ambitious man underneath, but rather, portrays him as a perfectionist asshole. Ashton Kutcher does his best in the role, and while he isn't exactly Jesse Eisenberg from the Social Network, he gets the job done, for the most part.
He shines when he portrays Steve Jobs' intensity, and we see glimpses of what could have been a great biopic, but he fails when portraying the older version of the character. He also has a hard time portraying Steve Jobs' distinct way of walking.
While it looks good in close-ups, it looks really forced in wide-angle shots. All of these complaints aside, at times, the movie can hold your attention, and has a few genuinely emotional scenes, but as a whole, the movie should probably be an HBO film, and even if it was, it wouldn't be one of the better ones.
This movie just misses so many opportunities (Apple and Microsoft's rivalry, the impact the Apple computer had on our way of living, Jobs's humbling experience with pancreatic cancer, etc.). While this movie isn't perfect, it definitely is not a 25%.
