Review of Jindabyne (2006) by Jeremy W — 20 Nov 2007
A tale set against the Australian outback. What looks like it could be a serial killer movie turns into a tale about the human condition told from many angles. Laura Linney is again superb and Gabriel Byrne shines.
The grey morals of this story is what sets it apart as you find yourself siding with each of the characters for different reasons. Water is a strong motif in the movie and is in many ways a tale about the displacement of a community of people who make way for the water created by a dam.
The central characters are all originally from another country. And it becomes about how these people affect the locals in light of the murder of an Aboriginal girl. If you've ever seen Safe you will know that this style of film making draws upon the suspenseful film-making usually found in horror movies.
The tension is cranked and the imagery bold. This movie will keep you hooked until the end.
