Review of Jindabyne (2006) by Rachael D — 21 Jun 2007
Hands up who's in love with Gabriel Byrne?...OK, designs on one of the film's stars aside, I thought this was a most moving and spectacular film. It explores issues most people would be loathe to touch with a bargepole...namely the strong and lingering presence of racism in many a small, isolated town around the world.
It deals with the complexity of relationships within a family brilliantly well, and is assisted in this by the ever-fabulous Laura Linney, who manages to enhance every film she appears in (in the horribly smug and shocking 'Love Actually' this was no mean feat!).
This is definitely one I would recommend, particularly for people interested in Australian culture and who aren't partial to running away and crying when faced with some scary home truths about nationality, religion, family and relationships.
