Review of Jigsaw (2017) by Rjmacready — 24 May 2020
A supposed "reboot" of the Saw series, even though it has precisely the same charms (clever "games", genuine suspense, spectacular deaths) and flaws (convoluted plot, unconvincing "twists", absurd criminal psychology) as the earlier ones. It even stars the same actor (Tobin Bell) as Jigsaw himself, so...more like an eighth film made after a lengthy hiatus than a complete reset to the franchise.
That said, it's arguably one of the better Saw films, whatever that might mean to you. Heck, I enjoyed it, like I always enjoy these films. But they're far from masterpieces, and aren't the slightest patch on the more maligned Hostel films. If you enjoyed the first seven films, though, you're unlikely to be disappointed.
