Review of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (2001) by Nathan W — 04 Feb 2004
I'm a big fan of corny, campy movies. I proudly list Gamera 1985 and Army of Darkness amongst my favorite movies of all time. Mystery Science Theater taught me that any movie can be made better by cracking wise about it. However, there's only so much value that you can add to any film in this way.
Unfortunately, Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter is one of those films that I wanted to love (based on its promise of vampires and lesbians with a certain sacrilicious flavor), but just couldn't. Unfortunately, the production values and the fact that it is a musical, made me horrified, rather than pleased. I kept waiting for the movie to try to be funny or daring in some way, but was left wanting throughout. JC: VH is filled with musical numbers and fight scenes, but neither are good enough to carry the film as a serious story. It also fails to fully embrace its wacky concept in such a way that the viewer can revel in its weirdness. JC: VH simply isn't a good film. It tries hard, but it's way too weird for even me to like. Watch at your own risk.
