Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (2000) by Chris M — 22 Nov 2008
Whoo boy...I have some problems with this. Let me just list them off:
1. Jesus, played by Glen Carter, is miscast. He was the understudy to the far superior Steve Balsamo. Glen Carter played a much better Simon.
2. Jerome Pradon plays Judas to the best of his skill. Too bad he's an obvious baritone and really can't pull off the demands of this high rock tenor role.
3. The High priests, though good singers, are about as subtle as a procession of trash trucks. The black robes, lighting, and characterizations scream "We're the bad guys!" and that's not how it should be.
4. Simon is terrible.
I could go on for longer, but you get the gist. This could have been good if they went with the 1996 London Cast, but they didn't. Instead, we got this. Oh well, at least we have the 1973 version!
