Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Alec H — 19 Nov 2007
Beyond Carl Anderson's performance as Judas, this film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical pales in comparison to the original concept recording, which is simply an excellent rock album regardless of its ties to musical theater.
Ted Neeley simply did not have the power that Deep Purple's Ian Gillan had on the original album. How interesting would it have been had Ian Gillan and Murray Head been available to take on the roles they originated for this film version? It certainly would have made for better music.
