Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Ray D — 23 Mar 2008
If I had guilty pleasures, this might be one. Very 1970's musical without dialogue to detract from the music. Norman Jewison's camerawork takes full advantage of the desert scenery, and the 70's hair/modern touches emphasize that it's not intended to be a historical recreation, but it's the music that's front and center, and well, "What's the buzz?" indeed.
Carl Anderson really does make a great Judas, though--almost overshadowing Ted Neeley's Jesus until he opens his mouth and wails. Rock Operas about Jesus are good times, man. Good Times.
