Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Craig C — 25 Mar 2008
As a full-blown non-theist and a hater of movie musicals, I feel a little weird saying this, but I love this movie. The mix of 1st Century and 20th Century brought to light that after 2000 years, people still have problems and doubts.
The conflict between Neely's Jesus and Anderson's Judas was brilliantly done, and I love the way the Christ figure was ultimately made human, with human wants, human needs, and the human trait of self preservation.
And unlike most musicals, where people randomly beak into song and dance, the entire film is a musical score (is this more akin to a rock opera?). As a side note, the woman that plays Mary magdalene has one of the richest, sweetest voices I have ever heard, and Ted Neeley, one of the most powerful.
