Review of Jessabelle (2014) by Orlando O — 17 Jan 2015
Jessabelle is a failed supernatural horror film that has a storyline that has been done and the cheap scares that has been seen too many times before. Director Kevin Greutert, who did the last two Saw movies, decides to handle the supernatural project with his choppy editing. He decided to go with the cheap scare tactics of the eerie isolated house in the middle of the swamp. As we watch one character being haunted in a noise creaking house from faucet leaking water, to objects being thrown across the room.
The movie follows Jessie (Sarah Snook) who gets in a car accident that is leaving her unable to walk. Jessie's distant father decides to have her stay in his place, which manages to be the isolated house in Lousiana. Jessie finds these tapes of what was left of her mother who died when she was a baby from cancer. As she soon learns, there is something more sinister about her mysterious mother that comes back to haunt her.
The premise of the movie felt like a redundant idea that was done in 2005 The Skeleton Key movie, which had more potential than this. Jessabelle had the cheap scare that was not even scary, dull acting, and the movie was quite boring.
