Review of Jersey Girl (2004) by Manny C — 16 Mar 2011
Kevin Smith has created so many memorable, raunchy, take-no-prisoners comedies that I can forgive for this major setback, easily his weakest effort. Jersey Girl centers on Ollie Trinke (Smith fav Ben Affleck) a New York City music publicist who loses his wife (former Affleck flame Jennifer Lopez) during childbirth.
Years later Ollie takes up in New Jersey living with his widowed father (George Carlin, wonderful) raising his eight year old daughter Gertie (Raquel Castro). Ollie then ends up falling in love with a video store clerk (Liv Tyler).
It gets gooey, but Smith still manages to get in some good laughs, most memorably when Gertie belts out a song from Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Make no mistake it's no Gigli, but it's also not all that much better.
