Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Russ M — 26 Jun 2014
I preface my review with the caveat that I have never seen the Broadway or Las Vegas versions of this show. That being said, I was very entertained by this film and enjoyed the style in which the story was told, reminded me of Ferris Beuller's day off or the start of Goodfellas where the characters address you directly. It was a nice spin from the standard movie plot.
It was paced well and never got to any lags where I wished the film would speed up. I was especially entertained by Vincent Piazza's performance as Tommy Devito, though I wonder if he watched a few Andrew Dice Clay stand up routines as his accent and mannerisms really reminded me of the Diceman.
The movie has some laugh out loud moments, at least for me, many of the patrons just didn't seem to pick up on the clever humorous banter between Tommy and other cast members. and sarcastic wit exchanged between them.
Other critics have remarked that this movie was "safe" and didn't take any risks. The statement that the target audience was around 72 years old made by one moronic critic reenforced the fact that the younger generations seem to lack the intellect to enjoy a movie of this caliber unless there is some gore, a high body count and perverse sexual devience on the screen to compensate for the piss poor writing most of Hollywood is spewing out.
I have very easy standards for movies; is it entertaining to me, and as I left the theater do I feel like I was violated and my money stolen, a few movies have left me feeling like my wallet was raped.
Overall and thoroughly enjoyable experience and very interesting storyline of a legendary musical act.
