Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Lee P — 19 Sep 2014
One of the rare hits to come out of Broadway it seems these days, it was eventual that the story of the 4 Seasons Jersey Boys was going to find its way to the big screen, and once the music starts taking centre stage towards the second act there are some moments where a little of the electricity finds it way to the audience.
That being said, the film suffers from two angles most notably, one the fact that it is very Jersey in the Goodfellas/Scorsese sort of way in terms of dialogue and the breaking of the 4th wall which kind of suggest hmmm what would Scorsese do with this material which leads to the second issue being for the standard direction chosen by Eastwood, for all of the dialogue and build up for the bands creation, his style is too stationary and quiet to pull the audience in from the get go making the proceedings for a chunk of the film a tad too pedestrian and not as exciting as it could have been.
Mixed bag which is a touch unfortunate as this musical could have been a lot bigger then it was.
