Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Bob S — 19 May 2012
This inspirational dramedy is an all-time favourite movie of mine and it has nothing to do with the authentic NFL clips and cameos. The story of men determined to be successful at their career and with their family has always resonated with me.
The genius of this film is how Maguire has found inspiration in his career, but lacks emotional connections at home; his client, Tidwell, has the â??quanâ?? with his family, but needs more emotion on the field.
Crowe has penned scripts and/or directed many great films (Fast Times, Singles, Almost Famous), but this is his best work on all fronts by a long shot. Crowe nailed the titular character with the perfect balance of vulnerability and confidence and couldnâ??t have found a more suitable actor than Cruise.
How often does a movie provide us with three lines that have become so ingrained in our vernacular that they are now corny and cliché? But, â??Show me the money!â??, â??You complete me.â?? and â??You had me at hello.
â?? originated with this film.
