Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Ellis W — 08 Sep 2014
What a beautifully eloquent piece of work. This is how all rom-com dramas should be approached, one that is neither drenched in syrupy schmaltz or as blunt as a smack in the face, a film that manages to be gentle as well as being sophisticated without loosing any heart.
This is undoubtedly Tom Cruise's best performance, and it goes to show that within his heavy catalogue of popcorn action hits he also has serious and wonderfully tender roles. What's great about him, Cuba Gooding Jr and Rene Zellweger is that their performances do not feel forced, but purely natural without the need to go full on or completely extravagant, and it's this strength that director Cameron Crowe plays to so well.
He knows there's no need to dive right into the drama, he knows the approach must be slight and laid back in order to capture the charm that these players so beautifully provide. A really lovely and genuinely funny comedy drama which never turns down the temperature.
