Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Peter H — 01 Aug 2010
It's a very lovable, very quotable movie. It's no masterpiece, but it has real heart and innocence that make it endearing in spite of its mawkish characters.
"SHOW ME THE MONEEEEEY!".
Cuba Gooding Jr. steals the show with his over-the-top energy, something Tom Cruise is usually known for. However, in this film, Tom is a little more laid back and portrays a little more vulnerability than we sometimes see in him. If only he were capable of a little more irony. I've never been a Renee Zellweger fan, so I just had to put up with her.
"You had me at hello.".
It's really the secondary characters that make this movie, like the jazz-loving man nanny, and I particularly liked Bonnie Hunt's understated performance as the sister.
"Help me help you. Help MEEE help YOOUU.".
At the end, you'll either say, "That was very boring," or "Actually, that was just thoughtful and heartfelt enough to have earned my appreciation." It is more than just a romantic comedy. It's about learning how to live with yourself.
"You... complete me.".
