Review of Jeremiah Johnson (1972) by Vincent O — 26 Jan 2008
Robert Redford went out of his way to make several thoughtful, exciting movies like this one (The Great Waldo Pepper, Brubaker) early in his career, no doubt against the advice of many of his supporters.
Jeremiah Johnson is one of those movies, and its depth takes time to fathom. On the surface this is a simple movie about a man finding his place in the world and then almost losing it, but there is so much more to it than that.
As his backwoods mentor says, "You can't cheat the mountain, pilgrim.".
