A thoughtful, bleak film, skillfully directed and well acted. Redford's transformation from dissafected loner to experienced mountain man and nemesis of the Crow indians is excellently portrayed. The film's strengths lie in its' ability to examine various native American cultures in a non-squeamish way, and without the weight of apologist political correctness upon it.
This is neither a rasict nor apologist film, it merely seeks to tell a story through the eyes of Johnson, and for that it should be praised as an interesting and valid piece of historical film-making.
