Ex-soldier Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) decides to leave civilisation behind and head into the Colorado wilderness to become a mountain man. Struggling at first to maintain his new-found existence, he slowly but surely acquires the necessary skills to live a comfortable life, as he comes across a variety of characters along the way.
The time taken for Johnson to really hone his craft is realistic as the seasons pass from one year to the next eventually leading to Johnson's legendary status after some trouble with the Crow tribe.
