Review of Jem and the Holograms (2015) by Greg B — 26 Oct 2015
"Jem and the Holograms" is a reboot on the 1980's cult cartoon of the same name. In the reboot, the social media revolution helps Jem and her sisters reach instant stardom when they get signed by Starlight Enterprises.
The movie speaks a good message about authenticity and being true to yourself, but it suffers from too many tonal shifts and a lack of character development. There is a sub-plot where Jem activates a robot her inventor dad made before he passed away that is supposed to contain some safeguarded secret Jem needs to hear.
This subtext has a hard time meshing wish the be true to yourself motif and the price of fame themes. I also heard the film deviates too much from the cartoon. I thought this film had a hard time deciding what it wanted to be and thus loses the essence of the source material --------------------------------------------------- C.
