Review of Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012) by Floyd R — 26 Apr 2013
I feel sorry for the cast of Jeff Who Lives at Home, Segel in particular seems like he really wants to make something more substantial than the kind of comedies he's typically known for. It's unfortunate that he stars in a movie that ultimately feels was built around a lazy production from the writing to the filming.
Camera work is shaky and ultimately distracting, as much as the Duplass brothers want to capture the realism of the performances and give their actors dramatic choices it seems more a hindrance than anything else.
The writing comes off as if it was made up as it moves along with simplistic devices created on the fly. Need something to motivate Jeff? How about have him talk about how he saw the movies Signs. Need a story device to show his brother is going through a midlife crisis? Have him buy an expensive car.
Nothing seems very thought out which makes the attempted poignant life realizations fall flat. Especially disappointing after the suburb Cyrus.
