Review of Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012) by Maksim C — 16 Feb 2014
4.0/5.0 stars -> Plot & Story.
A man who has never really found his place in life, Jeff (played by Jason Segel) has been tasked by his mother to go to the store to buy wood glue.
What should be a simple bus ride to the Home Depot turns into a defining day in the life of Jeff, his brother (Ed Helms) and their mother (Susan Sarandon).
A simple but fun story that should bring a little happiness to your life at the end.
4.5/5.0 stars -> Acting.
Hard to find a weak point in the acting in this movie. Character actors usually more well known for their comedic roles, Segel and Helms both put on a serious face for this movie.
3.0/5.0 stars -> Drama/Suspense.
Though there are a few predictable parts to this film, there are more than enough little surprises available to maintain a little drama.
Never more than a half serious movie, there are a few moments of actual suspense to toy with your emotions.
#.#/5.0 stars -> Special Effects.
Not a special effects driven movie. If you can't watch a movie without an explosion in it every five minutes, not the movie for you.
2.5/5.0 stars -> Comedy.
Not a comedy driven movie, but there are a few funny parts in it that will keep you laughing. I wouldn't go so far as to say that this movie will keep the comedy lovers laughing enough though.
4.0/5.0 stars -> That little something extra.
I don't know if it's because the film opens with Jeff speaking about the movie Signs, or the fact that I can relate to both of the brother characters in some way, but this movie actually held me.
It wasn't the most thought provoking or the most enlightening movie I've ever watched, but this movie connected with me in a way that I can't quite put to words.
4.0/5.0 stars -> Overall.
Jason Segel is an obvious draw, he has crazy star power right now. Small cast, but they are all worth watching.
If you're having difficulty deciding if you'd like to watch a comedy or a drama, throw this in. It may just have enough of both without making you think too much.
