Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Nicola D — 13 Apr 2008
A simple story beautifully told. Akin to 'The Field' in its values, 'Jean de Florette' utilizes the richness of the French countryside to highlight the importance of nature and land in our lives.
The dialogue is poetic, the performances staggeringly natural, the music by Jean-Claude Petit,(now widely known from the Dolmio ads), is as sweeping as the landscape and the end is a testament to the fragility of life.
When it comes to film-making, this is as good as it gets.
