Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Lou E — 28 Dec 2007
Beautiful but tragic. Perfectly realized characters in a story that has much to say about the fine line between determination and obsession, between optimism and stupidity, between friends and enemies.
It's easy to take sides but the film doesn't shy away from the fact that Jean plays as big a part in his downfall as the "villians" of the piece.
Engrossing but in a sad and somewhat frustrating way - and from that angle, if ever a film needed a Part 2, this is it.
