Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Mo A — 23 May 2010
Ah bien! Take the beautiful setting of southern France inhabited by a town full of stereotypically greedy and close-minded peasantry worthy of the pen of Zola. Throw in some free-spirited and naive bourgeois looking for 'The Good Life' and a plot revolving solely around two wells and some rabbits and you have yourself an amazing film.
The backdrop is stunningly beautiful and the drought that plagues the sun-drenched village is painfully tangible. Depardieu is solid but the two villains are the real stars. The film bubbles along the same track without ever getting stuck in a rut and the ending is brilliant and makes you want to see the sequel straight away.
