Review of JCVD (2008) by Kris D — 04 Jul 2009
I think it was Rolling Stone magazine (wrong?) who said something like "more interesting than The Wrestler." You know what: fuck The Wrestler. That film, brilliant as it is, is dwarfed by the sheer fucking awesome that is JCVD.
The washed out (or rather, washed up) cinematography, the soliliquy that concludes the second act, the intimate understanding of the world of obsessed Van Damme fans and by extension Van Damme's world, the intro, the soundtrack, the pace, the editing and to top it off, a stellar performance by Van Damme that just... oh man... it's the perfect alignment of all these elements that makes this film compulsory viewing.
This film is either the greatest send off in history or the greatest attempt at reinvention. Either way, after this, Van Damme deserves to be content.
"Sometimes life is... is... ugly. And stupid. And mean." It sure is, Van Damme. It surrre is. (Quoted from 'Wrong Bet').
