Review of JCVD (2008) by Simon-Félix L — 14 Jul 2009
I watched this expecting another "My Name is Bruce", but was astonished with the quality of this picture. Warning! This is not a comedy! Brilliantly shot, composed (JCVD's must-see "apparté" is seemlessly woven in the story, which, in turn makes masterful use of the Rashomon Effect), and acted, this very Belgian thriller is utterly believable, thanks in no small part to Van Damme's low profile, yet utterly visceral performance.
A must-see hostage situation thriller that can be compared with the best of its kind from the genre's heyday in 1970s french-speaking european cinema.
